“Kubernetes – expand the table!” event recap
On 15 June 2023, EBRC, Enterprise DB and Finologee teamed up to hold an event on the topic of Kubernetes. The event brought together professionals and enthusiasts from the Luxembourg Kubernetes and Cloud Native community. A lineup of accomplished speakers delivered informative presentations, delving into the driving forces, obstacles, and significant advantages of using containers to build, share and run applications.
“The Key benefit of Kubernetes”, by Georges Berscheid, Co-Founder & CTO at Finologee

In his opening speech, Georges Berscheid, CTO of Finologee, extended a warm welcome to the guests gathered on the Finologee terrace, enjoying the sunny weather. As he delved into the topic of containerisation, he emphasized the significance of this technology in enabling the efficient deployment and management of applications across different environments. He explained that a container is a standard unit of software that packages up code and all its dependencies so the application runs quickly and reliably from one computing environment to another. Then, he gave background information on Kubernetes architecture and components to introduce the concept of cloud native technologies that enable dynamic and agile application development. As an example of this he mentioned that Finologee uses cloud native tools like Amazon EKS to manage their development Kubernetes cluster, Bitbucket Pipelines for streamlined code deployment and SonarCloud Static Code Analysis for ensuring code quality.
Georges Berscheid: “Kubernetes serves as a powerful container orchestration platform. The partnership between Finologee and EBRC was a good match. Because of the financial services industry requirements we strictly follow, we have opted to keep all our data away from the public cloud.”
George’s intro was followed with a session titled “Reviews and Key Takeaways from the KubeCon Europe 2023,” presented by Etienne Ehrhardt, Cloud-native Solutions Architect at EBRC. Ehrhardt provided valuable insights into the growing importance of platform engineering, highlighting the trendy subjects discussed at the conference and sharing key trends and figures. He emphasized the thriving community surrounding Kubernetes, reflecting its rapid expansion, and increasing significance. Etienne: “Kubernetes is really emerging as the main operating system of the cloud.”
Next on the agenda was Dirk Krautschick, Sales Engineer at EnterpriseDB, who presented “The PostgreSQL & Kubernetes Good Practices.” As a founding member of CloudNativePG, Krautschick delved into the deployment of databases in Kubernetes, shedding light on the best practices to ensure efficient operations using Kubernetes operators. He also provided an overview of CloudNative Postgres, offering a concise summary of its advantages and benefits: “Postgres is one of the best choices to use a data base in a container environment.”
The event concluded with a session titled “Exploring the Benefits of GitOps with Flux,” presented by Stéphane Este-Gracias, Cloud Native Transformation Catalyst at ITQ and organiser of the Cloud Native Luxembourg Community. Stéphane introduced the concept of GitOps, outlining its principles based on the OpenGitOps framework. He provided an introduction to Flux, a popular GitOps tool, and announced the upcoming Cloud Native Luxembourg Community event on 11 July, focusing on demystifying Kyverno and its role in empowering Kubernetes with policy as a code.
